What happens if rain disrupts the IPL playoffs?
Rain doesn’t lead to an immediate call-off in IPL knockout matches, as officials are given extra time to try and produce a result on the field.
For Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, and Qualifier 2, an additional 120 minutes is built into the schedule.
The idea is to complete as much of a full game as possible, but if delays continue, overs are gradually reduced, with a minimum of five overs per side required.
For a 5-over match to take place, play must begin by the revised cut-off time, usually around 11:55 PM IST for a 7:30 PM start.
If conditions still don’t allow that but improve later, officials can opt for a standalone Super Over, as long as the ground is ready in time for a final cut-off, typically around 12:50 AM IST.
What happens if a playoff match is washed out?
If the weather doesn’t allow even a five-over match or a Super Over, the game is officially abandoned. With no reserve day for the preliminary playoffs, the result is then decided based on league-stage standings.
As per the playing conditions, if a playoff match (excluding the Final) cannot be completed, the team that finished higher on the points table is declared the winner.
This makes league-stage rankings extremely important. Finishing in the top two and playing in the Qualifer 1 not only offers a double chance but also acts as a safety net in case of a washout.
In the Eliminator, the third-placed team similarly holds a clear advantage over the fourth-placed side if rain plays spoilsport.
