Wayne Rooney believes Arsenal forward Viktor Gyokeres has been the Premier League signing of the season.
Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting CP for a fee of around £54m last summer and has scored 21 goals in 54 games across all competitions.
The Swedish striker has faced criticism at periods during the campaign, but improved across the second half of the season.
The 27-year-old is only the third Arsenal player to score 20+ goals in their debut season in thePremier League era, after Thierry Henry and Alexis Sanchez.
Rooney believes Gyokeres has been the difference-maker for Arsenal, who have ended a 22-year wait for the Premier League title this season.
Asked who has been the Premier League’s best transfer, Rooney had no hesitation in naming Gyokeres as his pick.
“Gyokeres. I think he is,” Rooney told The Wayne Rooney Show forBBC Sport.
“(Granit) Xhaka’s been brilliant, but I think what he’s brought to Arsenal is what they needed. Obviously finishing second in the last three years, I think he’s given them something a bit different and that’s been a big factor in them winning the league.”
