Serie A chief calls for night-time ban for Juventus vs. Torino derby: ‘Better to avoid’

Lega Serie A President Ezio Simonelli says that he expects the Derby della Mole between Juventus and city rivals Torino to be played only during the daytime next season and says that it is best to avoid ‘high-risk’ matches being scheduled in the final few weeks of the calendar.

Simonelli: Juventus vs. Torino should be played during the day and not in the final weeks of the season

The final round of the 2025-26 Serie A season was dragged into chaos after violent clashes between Juventus and Torino supporters in the hours leading up to their derby match at the Allianz Stadium.

One Juventus supporter was hospitalised and was said to be in a critical, but not life-threatening condition, which is why the Bianconeri ultras ordered their players not to take to the field against Torino.

As the Juventus vs. Torino match was being played at the same time as several other Serie A matches on Sunday, all of which had implications on Champions League qualification, all matches were forced into a delay as a result of the clashes in Turin. Those other matches were Milan vs. Cagliari, Verona vs, Roma, Cremonese vs. Como and Lecce vs. Genoa as well.

Simonelli, speaking after Tuesday’s FIGC general council meeting, says that he expects the Juventus vs. Torino matches will not be played during the night-time next season, and says that ‘high-risk’ matches such as these should not be played in the final few weeks of the season in order to avoid further scheduling issues.

“I live in Milan and when it’s the derby, I see people coming into the city with Milan and Inter shirts and there are never any clashes, just people going for the pleasure of watching the game. The fact that it is becoming an opportunity for clashes between hooligans in other cities is certainly not a positive thing,” SImonelli said (via TMW).

“This doesn’t distract from the fact that when certain matches have to be played contemporaneously in the final two weeks of the season, maybe it is not appropriate for such delicate matches to end up dragging the schedules of all the other games.

“I imagine that the Turin derby will also have a night-time ban next season. It is till clear that if it were to happen in the final two weeks of the season again, it could drag all the other games.

“It’s an objective question, which leads me to say that it is better to avoid having these high-risk matches in the final few weeks of the season.”
