The Arizona Cardinals returned to the practice field on Tuesday for the first of three days of practice in the second week of OTAs (organized team activities). They were still without their expected starting quarterback.
According to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss, Brissett continues his absence from the team as he seeks a new contract.
OTAs are still the voluntary part of the team’s offseason program, but with a new head coach and new offense, not having Brissett there is less than ideal.
He has not reported yet for any part of the offseason program. Told he is expected to be the Cardinals’ starting quarterback, he is seeking a new contract that pays him that way. He is due $4.9 million in salary and up to $510,000 in per-game roster bonuses, but only $1.5 million is guaranteed. No other expected starting quarterback not on a rookie contract makes less than $22 million this year.
The Cardinals and Brissett are reportedly significantly apart in the numbers of contract talks.
OTAs are voluntary. He doesn’t have to be there. What will be interesting is seeing whether or not he will show up June 8 for mandatory minicamp.
