Victor Wembanyama appeared to direct backup centers from the bench during the closing seconds of Game 5. Television cameras captured him whispering separately to Mason Plumlee and Bismack Biyombo at the scorer’s table.

Both reserves entered the game and immediately delivered hard fouls on Oklahoma City guard Jared McCain. Plumlee struck McCain in the back with an elbow on a drive to the basket.

Moments later Biyombo contested another McCain drive with extreme force and left the guard on the floor. Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein stepped in and exchanged words with Biyombo after the play.

The sequence went viral online within minutes of the final buzzer sounding at Paycom Center. Fans labeled the incident a deliberate targeting of Oklahoma City’s most productive player this series.

McCain scored 20 points in Game 4 and added 24 points in Game 5 for the Thunder. The rookie guard has been the offensive standout filling in for injured Oklahoma City starters.

The timing of the fouls raised questions because of an earlier incident between the two stars. McCain knocked Wembanyama to the floor during Game 3 on a drive to the basket.

No audio confirmed what Wembanyama said to either player before they checked into the game. The Oklahoma City Thunder won 127-114 and took a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Finals.

Oklahoma City bench players reacted immediately, asking referees to review the Plumlee contact as a hostile act. Officials allowed play to continue because the game was already in its final seconds.

Social media users quickly connected the whispered conversations with the two hard fouls on McCain. Many accused the French star of ordering his teammates to make the game physical with the Thunder guard.

Wembanyama finished Game 5 with a series-low 20 points on just four made field goals. He went 12 for 12 from the free-throw line to reach that scoring total.

San Antonio faces elimination in Game 6 as the series shifts back to Frost Bank Center. The controversy over Wembanyama’s whispered instructions now dominates the conversation heading into that matchup.
