It is rare that a player has played for both Liverpool and Manchester United, even rarer is a move from one club to another.
The last time a player transferred directly between the two clubs was in 1964, when Phil Chisnall joined the Reds from United, but that record should be broken this summer.
Bruno Fernandes has just enjoyed the best season of his career, scoring nine goals and providing 22 assists in just 37 games for the Red Devils.
A move to Merseyside is a possibility this summer, and it would make perfect sense for Liverpool to go out and sign the Premier League player of the season.
Bruno Fernandes to Liverpool needs to happen
The thought of Manchester United’s captain playing for Liverpool is almost blasphemous, but a clause in Fernandes’ contract could see it happen.
The Portugal international has a £57 million release clause this summer, on the surface a fairly hefty price for a 31-year-old with 12 months left on his deal.
When you consider the season Fernandes has just had though, that figure becomes a lot more reasonable.
The midfielder’s creative output was unmatched, especially from set-pieces, which is something Liverpool could benefit from massively.
Chance creation has been a big problem for the Reds this season, but adding Fernandes would ease the pressure on Liverpool’s current attackers and make the side one of the most dangerous in the world when on the attack.
Long-term interest from Saudi Arabia could also protect some resale value in the deal too, allowing Liverpool to get the best out of the player before moving him on to the Saudi Pro League and earning back some of their money.
Despite how perfect the move seems for Liverpool, it remains highly unlikely that Fernandes will make a switch to Anfield.
Manchester United have opened talks to keep their star man at Old Trafford according to Fabrizio Romano, and the player has offered little indication that he would be willing to betray the side to join their biggest rivals, Liverpool.
