Mississippi State softball fans who made the trip to Oklahoma City to watch the Bulldogs play in their first Women’s College World Series are wearing a message in support.
Attendees are wearing shirts that say, “An underdog is still a freakin’ dawg.”
The phrase comes from Mississippi State pitcher Delainey Everett‘s quote after the Bulldogs (43-19) upset No. 3 Oklahoma in the Norman super regional on May 24 to reach the WCWS for the first time in program history.

“An underdog is still a freakin dog,” Everett said in an emotional TV interview from the field. “We knew it. We were on the bus. Oh my gosh. Everything that we worked for came through today and we ain’t done yet.”
Everett pitched a three-hit shutout in her first start of the season. She has been limited since having shoulder surgery in the offseason.
Fans have embraced the underdog mentality as Mississippi State is the only team to make the WCWS that wasn’t a top-16 national seed.
The Bulldogs’ first game in the WCWS is against No. 11 Texas Tech on May 28 (11 a.m., ESPN).
The winner will face Texas or Tennessee in the winner’s bracket on May 30 (2 p.m., ABC). The losers of both games will face each other in an elimination game on May 29 (6 p.m., ESPN).
