Dallas Mavericks legend Derek Harper joined Dallas Express Sports Network’s Mark Elfenbein for a wide-ranging conversation on his playing career, his years behind the microphone, and the current state of the franchise.
Harper, whose No. 12 jersey hangs in the rafters, reflected on the honors that came after his playing career, including his jersey retirement and bobblehead recognition.
The former Mavericks guard also discussed the transition from competing on the court to analyzing games on television, saying broadcasting required preparation, practice, and a willingness to improve.
Elfenbein and Harper also talked about how the point guard position has changed since Harper’s playing days, with today’s lead guards often expected to score at a much higher level than traditional floor generals.
The conversation then turned to the modern Mavericks, including the franchise’s recent changes and the arrival of Cooper Flagg.
Harper praised Flagg’s two-way ability, basketball intelligence, and long-term upside, while noting that defenders are already adjusting to his game.
