49ers’ Nick Bosa on track for training camp but not rushing recovery: OTA notebook (paywall)
The San Francisco 49ers defensive end said that after tearing his left ACL in 2020, he tried to push every recovery milestone as hard as he could.

“And I probably dealt with some stuff that I didn’t need to deal with in terms of bumps in the road of recovery,” he said.

His current recovery, from a torn right ACL suffered in September, has been more methodical. That’s partly because it’s the second time he’s damaged the right ACL, having done so as a high schooler in Florida. That meant his patellar tendon needed more time to adapt, which was different than his previous two rehabilitations.

The other factor is that he’s simply older — he turns 29 in October — more established in the league and doesn’t feel the same impetus to rush back like he did in 2020.

Still, Bosa said he’s “pretty far along” in the recovery and is back to moving around on a side field during the 49ers’ organized team activities. He said he plans to return to practice early in training camp and be ready for the team’s Week 1 game in Australia on Sept. 10, which would be 11 days shy of one year since the injury.

“All the rest of my body feels pretty darn good,” he said. “My fingers haven’t felt this good in probably 20 years.”

The Good and Not So Good from 49ers OTAs: First Impression of Rookies
“[Black] Caught four passes during team drills. On one of his catches, he had to extend his arms and catch the ball away from his body, which was impressive. Clearly, he has good hand-eye coordination. He can catch a check-down pass. And he hits the hole hard. It’s unclear how good his vision and route running are at this time, but it’s still early………[Cowing was] arguably the most explosive wide receiver on the field today. Cowing caught four passes, including a 40-yard deep pass and two 15-yarders over the middle. He seems much stronger than he did the past two seasons. Look for him to make the team and be the primary returner.”

49ers’ McCaffrey: Workload managed in practice, not games
“Through the rest of the offseason program and training camp, the Niners plan to be cautious with McCaffrey, who did not practice Thursday but did Wednesday. Their hope is that keeping him fresh will also help him and the running game regain some of the juice they lost last season.”

Kyle Shanahan discusses the start of 49ers OTAs
“I did that last year for the first time, and I think I’ve told you guys about that, or other people have. That was 13 guys and it was all guys who had been here four years or longer. Just to tell them kind of the difference going into this offseason compared to the previous five. I tried to do the same thing, but when I looked up there and tried to pick those guys, there were too many of them now, there were too many guys who had kind of been a part of it. So, I just ended up inviting guys, most of the starters who had been here the last two years. It’s tough. I can’t invite 90 guys over to my house, and I don’t want to invite 50 guys over to my house right now, so I’ve got to have a spot to cut it off so it doesn’t get too much. We just talked about I wanted the guys to be in this offseason and just the group there that was starting, and doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to start this year, but we’re the group that kind of went through it together last year and just leading us this way.”

49ers plan joint practices with Titans, Chargers; international travel plans revealed
“Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed on Thursday that the 49ers are planning joint practices with both the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Chargers ahead of their preseason matchups. The Titans are San Francisco’s lone home opponent during the preseason, while the Chargers will host the 49ers in Southern California.”

Dre Greenlaw opens up on 49ers return and reunion with Fred Warner
“It gives you a different perspective on how much the building really means, how much the people inside the building mean to you, how much that passion you play for isn’t just for the love of the game, but it’s for the love of the building, as well,” Greenlaw said. “So, it just gives you a little bit of reality and just, okay, why do you play the game of football?””

49ers injury notes: Isaac Guerendo setback; Nick Bosa, George Kittle updates; Mac Jones doesn’t throw
“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Thursday and provided several key injury updates as the team continued organized team activities (OTAs), which began on Wednesday.”
