Titans’ Robert Saleh embracing NFL preseason oddity

The Tennessee Titans are planning a different approach to the preseason under new head coach Robert Saleh, and it could end up becoming one of the more important developments of the offseason.

Saleh met with Titans media ahead of their final OTA practice for May and mentioned that the team’s goal is to hold joint practices with all three of their preseason opponents. This has only occurred once, by the Miami Dolphins in 2024.

Teams typically hold one or two joint practices while utilizing the other week to focus on their sole preparation. However, a recent trend is possibly leading to this becoming more common, as the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars confirmed to hold joint practices for all of their respective preseason games this season.

As for the Titans, a team trying to establish a new identity, this move makes plenty of sense. Joint practices are viewed as more valuable than the preseason games themselves because coaches can control the tempo, emphasize situational football, and evaluate players in a more competitive environment without exposing starters to unnecessary game reps.

With Saleh always having been viewed as a detail-oriented defensive coach, it is not surprising to see him lean into that kind of structure. It takes two to tango for that scheduling to happen, but the Titans kick off their preseason slate by visiting his former team, the San Francisco 49ers.

Also, Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald made mention of doing a joint practice with the Titans for their second preseason game. The two teams recently held joint practices in 2024. The Titans close out their preseason at home against the Chicago Bears, so they are likely the wild-card team in determining if Robert Saleh gets his wish.
