Munetaka Murakami grimaced when he reached first base Friday night. After overrunning the bag, the Chicago White Sox rookie walked gingerly, massaging his right hamstring.

White Sox manager Will Venable and members of the training staff hustled out for an examination. A short look sent shockwaves throughout Rate Field.

Two seasons removed from experiencing a 121-loss campaign and drained from an extended rebuilding project, the White Sox were beginning to look like a legitimate contender in the AL Central.

Led by Murakami’s early power surge, the second-place White Sox (29-27) entered Friday three games behind the Cleveland Guardians.

Murakami became the fourth player in MLB history to connect on 20 homers during his first 55 games.

Following a short examination near first base, Murakami exited the game against the visiting Detroit Tigers. He was replaced by Luisangel Acuna, who scored the White Sox’s first run on Miguel Vargas’ run-scoring double.

With the Tigers leading 2-1 in the seventh inning Friday, the White Sox did not immediately release an update on Murakami’s condition.
