Day One of the NCAA Regionals delivered chaos across the bracket, with four No. 1 seeds dropping their openers. A stunning list headlined by No. 1 overall seed UCLA falling 3–2 to Saint Mary’s and Auburn getting blitzed 13–8 by Milwaukee. For a moment, it looked like Texas A&M was headed for the same fate.
Instead, the Aggies woke up just in time.
Opting for the early game, Michael Earley’s squad sleepwalked through the first half, falling behind 5–0 to Lamar as the Cardinals controlled every inch of momentum. But in the bottom of the fifth, junior Gavin Grahovac finally lit the spark with a solo home run. Two batters later, Chris Hacopian launched a two‑run shot to cut the deficit to 5–3, and from there, the entire game flipped.
A&M’s pitching staff locked in, holding Lamar scoreless the rest of the way, while the offense chipped away with four more runs to complete a 7–5 comeback victory, the first regional win of Earley’s head‑coaching career.
Now the Aggies turn their attention to a Texas State team riding its own wave of momentum after upsetting USC. The Bobcats already own a win over A&M this season, though the two teams split their midweek series in a pair of tight, home‑team‑favored games.
The stakes couldn’t be clearer: whoever wins Saturday’s matchup takes control of the College Station Regional, moving into the driver’s seat and forcing any challenger to beat them twice to advance. With upsets already reshaping the national picture, the opportunity is there for the taking, if the Aggies can seize it.
