More than 890 people were arrested across France in riots following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG’s) Champions League victory, French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on Monday.

That was 45% more arrests than after the club’s victory the previous year, the minister told the broadcaster France Inter.

He said the high number of arrests showed that the security forces had done their job well, as it had been clear in advance that riots would occur.

Rioting broke out in several French cities as PSG rose to victory. In some places, shops were looted and fires set.

On the Champs-Élysées boulevard in Paris, where thousands of people had gathered, clashes occurred between masked individuals and security forces. Projectiles and tear gas were used.

Nuñez said an overall 178 security personnel were injured.
