Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White on Monday described her relationship with Caitlin Clark as “great,” amid escalating pressure on the Fever coach that has cranked up in the days since a viral confrontation with Clark has proven the enduring image of a road loss to the expansion Portland Fire.

White and Clark’s argument occurred during a timeout during Saturday’s 100-84 defeat to the Fire, which dropped the Fever’s record to 4-4. Clark’s defense was the topic of discussion as Portland’s players hunted her relentlessly in their half court offense, and the two-time All-Star did not take kindly to White’s instructions on the bench as she left her seat during the huddle.

“I think what happened in that moment is I was challenging a player,” White told reporters during Fever practice. “It’s coaching.  I don’t often think it becomes an issue if you’re watching it in men’s sports”

White did her best to defuse the ongoing tension that hangs over the Fever, who entered 2026 with high expectations amid Clark’s return to health following an injury-plagued second season in the WNBA.

White described efforts to portray her relationship with Clark in a negative light as “sensationalism.” She said she has more in common with Clark than not, and she hopes they continue to bring the best out of one another.

“My relationship with Caitlin is great,” White said. “I love Caitlin. I ride with her, we have a great relationship.”
