Sooner magic arrived right on time for the Oklahoma Sooners in their regional series in Atlanta. After rallying from an 8-2 deficit on Sunday to beat Georgia Tech, OU did it again in the winner-take-all game on Monday to advance to the super regionals.
The Sooners jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Dayton Lachance two-run homer and an RBI single from Dasan Harris.
The Yellow Jackets battled back with two runs in the third, two runs in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take a commanding 7-3 lead.
Just like they did on Sunday, the Sooners started chipping away after they fell behind. OU scored two in the bottom of the seventh on Camden Johnson’s fielder’s choice and Jaxon Willits’ RBI double to cut the lead to 7-5. Oklahoma added another one in the eighth when Dasan Harris scored.
Down a run in the bottom of the ninth, Johnson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Lechance’s groundout to shortstop. Willits provided heroics once again with a single to drive in Johnson from second base and tie the game, and send it to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, Jackson Cleveland sat down Georgia Tech in order to put the Sooners’ lineup back at the plate. Cleveland 3.2 innings of scoreless ball to shut down the Yellow Jackets
Dayton Tockey led off the inning for the Sooners and fell behind 1-2 in the count before working a full count. On the 3-2 pitch, Tockey took the offering from Tate McKee to the deepest part of the park in straightaway centerfield for the walk-off home run.
The Sooners now head to Kansas to face the Jayhawks in the super regional round of the NCAA tournament. Two more wins and Oklahoma will go to Omaha for the College World Series.
