7 Akron-area baseball teams set to play in OHSAA regional semifinals

Seven Greater Akron high school baseball teams are scheduled to play in a regional semifinal this week.

Archbishop Hoban, Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Highland, Hudson, Norton, St. Vincent-St. Mary and Walsh Jesuit are in the Round of 16 in their respective divisions.

Here’s what to know as the season extends into June.

OHSAA Division II, Region 5 semifinal

Who: Highland (18-4) vs. Walsh (11-11)

Where/when: Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills; 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3

Regular-season matchup: Highland beat host Walsh 2-0 on May 8 with Josh Butcher pitching a seven-hit shutout. Butcher struck out two and walked one. Highland’s Casey Myser singled in Colton Winston and Anthony DePompei in the first inning. Winston led off the game with a triple and DePompei was hit by a pitch. … Highland’s Lucas Gerding also hit a triple. Myser finished with two hits. … Walsh’s Caleb Mecurio pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts and allowed two runs, five hits and one walk. Matthew Mansbery, Carlos Smith and Rylan Batley had two hits apiece.

Highland tournament notes: Highland beat Perry 8-1 and Massillon 9-0 last week to win a district championship. … Dan Miller pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts, Grady Gibb went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Winston had two hits, two runs and an RBI against Perry. … Reid Oney pitched a three-hit shutout versus Massillon and struck out six. Myser, Gibb, Miller and Gerding had two hits apiece against the Tigers. DePompei and Gibb each had two RBIs, Myser scored three runs and Winston had a hit, three walks and two runs.

Walsh tournament notes: Walsh defeated Euclid 20-0 and Mayfield 7-3 last week to win a district title. … Anthony D’Angelo struck out 13 in a five-inning no-hitter, Batley hit a two-run home run and Colin Locigno had two hits, four RBIs and three runs against Euclid. Mansbery, Smith, Aiden Cooke and Noah Silversten had two hits apiece. … Mansbery totaled two triples, a single and three runs versus Mayfield. Shawn Sullivan struck out 10 and allowed five hits, two walks and three runs in 5⅓ innings. Sean McHugh had three hits and two RBIs. Locigno added two hits and two RBIs.

What’s next: The winner plays Lakewood or Shaker Heights in a regional final at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Gilmour.

OHSAA Division II, Region 6 semifinal

Who: Hudson (15-11) vs. Hoover (23-4)

Where/when: Oberlin College Dill Field; 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3

Hudson tournament notes: Hudson beat Austintown Fitch 2-1 and Nordonia 8-2 last week to win a district crown. … Jack Sutton, Alex Travis, Holden Reed and Chase Dennison combined on a six-hitter, did not allow an earned run and struck out eight against Fitch. Chase Deutsch had two hits and a run. Ryan Jones and Luke Humenansky had RBI groundouts. Blake Bakonyi hit a double. Luke Sutton walked and scored a run. … Hudson beat Nordonia with an eight-run sixth inning. Humenansky, Xavier Pallo, Jones and Luke Sutton each walked to score a run, and Brex Stacey hit a three-run double. Reed earned the win in relief of Pallo.

What’s next: The winner plays Amherst Steele or Brecksville in a regional final at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Oberlin.

OHSAA Division III, Region 9 semifinal

Who: CVCA (21-8) vs. Chardon (18-12)

Where/when: The Ballpark at Hudson; 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 3

CVCA tournament notes: CVCA topped Northwest 19-0 and Lake 7-4 last week to win a district championship. … Kyle Shaw pitched four shutout innings with six strikeouts against Northwest. Connor McGough and Jacob Lancy each had two hits, a walk, two RBIs and three runs. Layne Davis added two hits, an RBI and three runs. Peyton Drabick contributed two hits, four RBIs and a run. … McGough walked three times, singled, scored two runs and pitched 2⅔ innings in relief for the win against Lake. Alex Mammone hit a two-run single, Jonah Gaudio doubled in a run, Drabick had four hits and two runs and Zac Anderson walked four times.

What’s next: The winner plays Hoban or STVM in a regional final at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Hudson.

OHSAA Division III, Region 9 semifinal

Who: Hoban (23-5) vs. STVM (18-9)

Where/when: The Ballpark at Hudson; 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 3

Hoban tournament notes: Hoban beat Kent Roosevelt 6-1 and Westlake 9-5 last week to win a district championship. … Matthew Ramsey pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts, and hit a single and a double and had two RBIs against Kent. Colt Andrews and Ben Rovnak each had two hits, a run and an RBI. Max Marconi hit a two-run single. … Zach Karhoff had two singles, a triple, a run and three RBIs versus Westlake. Jack Brayer logged a single, triple and two runs, Rovnak hit an RBI triple and Andrews had a hit and two RBIs. Zak Zellers earned the win and Gavin Lindsey recorded a save.

STVM tournament notes: STVM defeated Revere 5-3 and Hawken 6-0 last week to win a district title. … William Tober pitched a complete game, and also hit a single and a triple and scored a run against Revere. Justin Pytash hit a two-run single and Aidan Reynolds added an RBI single. … Reynolds pitched a seven-hit shutout with two walks versus Hawken. Rylan Hurley hit a two-run single and drove in another run with a ground out. Matthew Engelhart added a two-run single and scored a run. Alex Slone walked twice and scored two runs. 

What’s next: The winner plays CVCA or Chardon in a regional final at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Hudson.

OHSAA Division IV, Region 13 semifinal

Who: Norton (20-6) vs. Youngstown Cardinal Mooney (22-3)

Where/when: Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium in Canton; 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 2

Norton tournament notes: Norton topped West Branch 6-2 and Jefferson Area 6-4 last week to win a district crown. … Caeden DeDomenic pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowed four hits, two unearned runs and two walks against West Branch. Jonny Kievman hit a two-run double and scored two runs. Jackson Lewis and Noah Jung each doubled in a run. Ronnie Ammons added two hits and a run. Matt Hymes walked twice, singled and scored two runs. … Ammons scored two runs and pitched four innings in relief and allowed one run for the win against Jefferson Area. Hymes and Kievman each had two hits and a run. Kievman and Tyler Ruther hit RBI singles.

What’s next: The winner plays Canton Central Catholic or Elyria Catholic in a regional final at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Munson.
