The New England Patriots saw Drake Maye take a huge leap last season, and he finished second in the MVP Award voting.
Matthew Stafford won MVP, but the Patriots ended up playing in the Super Bowl. While Maye did not win the Super Bowl, he clearly established himself as one of the best players in the league over the course of the season. Next season, Maye will have to follow up on his MVP campaign, and ESPN’s Seth Walder thinks he is capable.
Walder listed Maye among the Top 10 MVP candidates for next season, but also thinks Maye “deserved” to win MVP last season.
“He deserved MVP last season, when he led the league in QBR (77.1) by a solid margin,” wrote Walder on Monday. “The Patriots will face a much tougher schedule this time around; according to ESPN Research, they have the sixth-hardest schedule. But if Maye performs like he did last season, he can certainly do it again — especially if the A.J. Brown addition goes as expected.”
May had a phenomenal season. He threw for 4,394 yards and 31 touchdowns and ran for 450 yards and four touchdowns. He led the league in completion percentage, passer rating and quarterback rating.
Now, with a new array of weapons, he could be even better. AJ Brown and Romeo Doubs are a massive upgrade from last year’s top pass-catching duo of Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte.
