The Denver Broncos are heading into the 2026 season as one of the top Super Bowl contenders once again. While the offense is going to be the focus with Jaylen Waddle coming to town, the defense is likely going to be what brings this team on a playoff run.

The leader of said defense is Patrick Surtain II, the All-Pro cornerback who might be the best CB in the entire NFL. He’s heading into the first year of a $96 million extension, and it’s completely deserved.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Broncos have agreed to a $5 million contract raise with Surtain in a very interesting move well ahead of the regular season.

Broncos agree to $5M raise with Patrick Surtain II

“The Broncos and star CB Pat Surtain II agreed on a contract adjustment, giving him a $5M raise now and a chance to make $5M more next year with a Pro Bowl or All-Pro nod,” Rapoport reports.

This is a very interesting contract adjustment, as Surtain is getting a raise before he’s even stepped onto the field for the first year of his four-year, $96 million extension.

The $5 million raise on its own is interesting, but acknowledging a $5 million payday for making the Pro Bowl or an All-Pro next year is also noteworthy.

At 26 years old, and after playing in the NFL for five seasons, Surtain has been a Pro Bowler four times, a first-team All-Pro twice, and a second-team All-Pro once.

He was also the 2024 NFL Defensive Player of the Year when he was a shutdown cornerback who also had four interceptions, one pick-six, 11 passes defended, and a ridiculous 58.9 passer rating allowed.

Based on the terms of this revised contract, Surtain is getting a $5 million pay raise right away, and will also now get $5 million for every year he’s either an All-Pro or a Pro Bowler, which he has been ever since his second season in the NFL.
