San Antonio Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson provided an encouraging injury update on star guard De’Aaron Fox ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Johnson said Fox is heading in the right direction as he continues to deal with a right high ankle sprain.

” Not sure, to answer the question, 100 percent, but it feels like [Fox’s injury situation] is moving in a better direction, and with rest, I hope he’s better tomorrow than he is today, and so on and so forth since our last game,” Johnson said.

Fox missed the first two games of the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder

De’Aaron Fox has been dealing with lingering ankle issue

He first suffered the injury during Game 4 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Minnesota Timberwolves. It’s now lingering into the NBA Finals.

In five games against the Thunder, the two-time All-Star averaged 11.2 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 36.5 percent from the field and 22.7 percent from beyond the arc in 31.4 minutes of action.

It is clear that the 28-year-old is not himself, and if that remains the case in these Finals, the Spurs could be in a heap of trouble.

The former first-round pick in 2017 will soon appear in his first NBA Finals of his career. Fox was drafted by the Sacramento Kings and was traded to the Spurs last season.

He’s played a key role for the Spurs thus far, and if they want to win their sixth title in franchise history, they’ll need Fox to revert to the lightning-quick guard he’s established himself to be.

Game 1 of the NBA Finals is set for Wednesday, June 3, at 8:30 p.m. ET in San Antonio.
