Mayo has easy time in state boys tennis quarterfinals

Jun. 2—MINNEAPOLIS — Unseeded Becker didn’t figure to be much of a match against No. 3 seed and perennial state boys tennis power Mayo.

That proved to be true as the Spartans blasted Becker 7-0 Tuesday, winning every match in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A state boys team tennis tournament at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center.

The Spartans moved to 20-1 this season and will play No. 2 seed Edina in Wednesday’s 10 a.m. semifinals.

The Mayo-Edina semifinal is a repeat of last year when the Hornets ultimately beat the Spartans 4-3 in a brilliant dual. The winner moves on to the 4 p.m. state championship and the loser to the third-place match at 2 p.m. All of the action is at the Baseline Tennis Center.

Edina beat unseeded St. Thomas Academy 7-0 in one of the quarterfinals. No. 4 seed Mounds View beat No. 5 Eden Prairie 5-2 and No. 1 and three-time state defending champion Wayzata rolled to a 7-0 win over unseeded Blaine in the other quarterfinal.

Mayo’s lone loss this season was to Wayzata, 7-0.
