FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – TreVeyon Henderson made headlines back in March when the New England Patriots running back posted a bible verse on X in response to the Chicago Bulls‘ decision to waive Jaden Ivey due to comments he made about the Pride Month celebrations.
Specifically, the guard called them “unrighteousness,” which led to his release. And in response, Henderson posted, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
He drew heavy criticism for this, and Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the comments at the league meetings, saying that he wants the players to “express what they believe in their heart and in their mind, but also want to make sure that they’re educated, and we want to be inclusive.”
On Tuesday, Henderson spoke with reporters for the first time since his post.
“I think the biggest thing — I know the cost it comes with when I share my faith in Jesus Christ,” Henderson said. “I have love for everyone, but my love may not look like the world’s love. I try to love people through a biblical lens with faith and truth.”
“I know a lot of people may be offended by it, but I think the biggest thing is that we look at life through two different lenses,” he added. “Somebody looks at it one way, I look at it another. I’m not going to stop sharing my faith. I’ll continue to share my faith and reach people and just led the Lord use me to reach people with love and truth.”
Henderson added that he and Vrabel had a “great” conversation about it.
“He was very respectful about my beliefs,” Henderson said. “He expressed that a lot on this team, so I really appreciate coach for that.”
He’s aware of what’s been talked about online, but Henderson will continue to lean on his faith, just like he always has.
“It can come with a lot, to be honest but at the end of the day they criticized a perfect man, a man who never did anything wrong and so how much more they criticize me. I’m not a perfect man, I’m a man that makes mistakes as well,” he explained. “But, I just try to continue to lean on the Lord to allow him to help me to become the best person that I can be.
“I’m not a perfect person. I go through things just like everyone else. That’s why I really open up my struggles and the things I went through before I met Christ. But, I think in this world we need hope and I just try to point people to the only one who can give us true hope.”
