Sean Mannion and Markel Bell earn Jordan Mailata’s early approval

Jordan Mailata has come a long way. From his arrival through the International Player Pathway Program to becoming an offensive captain for the Philadelphia Eagles, his rise remains one of the most remarkable stories in franchise history. The former rugby player transformed himself into a cornerstone left tackle, a Super Bowl champion, and a Second-Team All-Pro. At this point, his football journey feels worthy of a Hollywood script, à la that of another legend with a fantastic story, Vince Papale. Recently, the former seventh-round selection was named one of the better-valued players on the roster relative to their draft position.

Because of that journey, Mailata’s opinions tend to carry weight inside the Eagles‘ locker room. When he speaks about teammates or coaches, people listen.

Following another OTA practice session open to the media, Mailata found himself discussing two individuals who have already made strong impressions: new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion and rookie offensive tackle Markel Bell.

Jordan Mailata believes Sean Mannion is a football genius

The Eagles enter the 2026 season with a new offensive coordinator guiding one of the league’s most talented offenses. While fans are still curious about what Mannion’s system might look like, Mailata appears completely sold on the coach’s football mind. In comments shared by The Athletic’s Zach Berman, Mailata described Mannion in glowing terms.

“If I were to lock the three smartest people in the facility in one room, Sean would be there, and I think Sean will just be himself. It would just be Sean… He’s a wizard. And I’m super excited, as the year goes on, we get to display what is in the beautiful mind of his.”

The veteran tackle went even further, describing his new coordinator as an “evil genius” who simply “knows ball.”

Those are significant endorsements coming from one of the offense’s leaders. The Eagles are tasked with replacing one of the NFL’s most productive offensive systems, and Mailata’s confidence suggests players are buying into Mannion’s vision early.

Markel Bell is turning heads, too

Mailata also offered a memorable assessment of tackle Markel Bell. The rookie enters the NFL as a developmental prospect, but his physical traits immediately stand out.

He is expected to spend time learning behind future Hall of Famer Lane Johnson while developing into a potential long-term option to replace the legend. Apparently, his size has already caught Mailata’s attention.

“Kel is a big fellow, man. I don’t know where we found him. They said they found him out of Miami University. That’s a lie. He’s not of this planet.”

It’s still far too early to know what Bell’s future holds, and Eagles fans will have to wait before seeing Mannion’s offense in action. Still, when one of the most respected leaders on the roster is this enthusiastic about both, it’s hard not to share some of that excitement heading into training camp.
