Panama vs Croatia: World Cup 2026 Preview
On top for much of the first half and dominating possession, it looked as though Panama were on course to secure a first World Cup victory. However, a late loss of focus allowed Ghana to launch a devastating counter-attack expertly finished by Caleb Yirenkyi in the fifth minute of injury time.
“The result is painful, but that is because we deserved better,” Panama manager Christiansen said after the game. The Dane saw his side create plenty of chances but will need his forwards to show more ruthlessness in front of goal against Croatia.
Ismael Diaz is perhaps the biggest goalscoring threat. The 28-year-old has 17 goals for his country and has turned up in big games, scoring six goals at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
While Panama are seeking goals, Croatia’s focus is on addressing their defensive problems. Level at the break with England thanks to well-taken goals from Baturina and Petar Musa, they conceded twice more in the second 45, much to the disappointment of long-time head coach Zlatko Dalic.
“We must be much, much better,” declared the 59-year-old, who was particularly unhappy with how his team defended set-pieces.
Dalic will also hope that captain Modric can find his best form against Panama. The legendary figure struggled against England, giving away a first-half penalty before being subbed off in the 58th minute.
