Bayern Munich survived a scare in the DFB Cup as Harry Kane scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to secure a 3-2 victory over third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden on Wednesday.
Kane, who had been perfect in 31 competitive penalties for clubs and country since the 2022 World Cup, missed his first spot-kick for Bayern earlier in the match. Despite this, the England captain redeemed himself by heading in the decisive goal deep in stoppage time, marking his sixth goal in three games this season.
Bayern appeared in control after Kane’s early penalty and a second goal from Michael Olise, but the hosts struck twice in six minutes through Fatih Kaya, leveling the match and putting the Bavarians under pressure. Kane later missed another penalty, but Bayern managed to hold on until Kane’s last-gasp finish.
Defender Konrad Laimer reflected on the match: “Sometimes it’s like that in football. We had enough chances to go 3-0 or 4-0 up, but it’s a Cup first round and never easy. What counts is that we qualify.”
Bayern Munich now advance to the second round of the German Cup, avoiding an embarrassing early exit.
