The last of four World Cup 2026 matches to be played at Monterrey Stadium has already arrived, and it’s a blockbuster round of 32 tie between the Netherlands and Morocco.
Both of these teams were among the last eight at the World Cup four years ago, and it was Morocco that went one better to become the first African nation to reach the semi-finals.
Despite their slightly sketchy World Cup performances at the World Cup since the turn of the century, the free-scoring nature of the Netherlands in the group stage this year has put Morocco on notice.

Netherlands vs Morocco prediction
The Dutch have made a fine start to the tournament. They twice squandered a lead in their opener against Japan but went on to put five past Sweden and three past Tunisia to finish at the top of Group F.
Morocco also drew their first game against Brazil, beating Scotland and Haiti to sail through to the knock-out stages in second place. They were behind against Haiti in what was in the end a 4-2 win; the AFCON finalists scored first against Brazil.
We can be sure Ronald Koeman and the Netherlands are very aware of the early goal-scoring exploits of Ismael Saibari in Morocco’s first two games, but they’ll back themselves to have the attacking weaponry to overcome whatever the North African side throws at them.
They scored 10 goals in the group stage and have several forward players who’ve found their shooting boots. Cody Gakpo scored twice against Sweden, Crysencio Summerville once each against Japan and Sweden.
But it’s Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey who’s leading the charge with three goals in the Oranje’s last two games.
That’s the size of the defensive challenge facing Mohamed Ouahbi’s team. Their only clean sheet in the group stage was against a Scotland side that didn’t muster a single shot on target.
The Moroccan back line will be put to the test in Monterrey. They have the ability, going forward as a team – especially on the counterattack – to hurt the Dutch, but they might need to do so more than once to outgun them.
Score prediction: Netherlands 3-2 Morocco
The only previous competitive meeting between these teams was a 2-1 win for the Netherlands in the group stage of the World Cup in 1994, the last time the tournament was hosted in the United States.
Indeed, every match between the Netherlands and Morocco has ended 2-1 one way or another. This time around, in a World Cup that’s been full of goals, there could easily be one or two more than that.
