Barcelona Drop Points at Rayo Vallecano as Faulty VAR Sparks Controversy

Barcelona dropped their first points of the new LaLiga season after being held to a 1-1 draw by Rayo Vallecano in Madrid, in a match overshadowed by a faulty VAR system.

VAR Malfunction Sparks Debate

Lamine Yamal gave Barcelona the lead in the first half from the penalty spot after a challenge by Pep Chavarria. However, the decision could not be reviewed because the VAR system malfunctioned at the time.

Rayo equalised through substitute Fran Perez, who finished unmarked at the back post from a corner. The controversy surrounding the penalty award fueled a heated atmosphere at Estadio de Vallecas, with Rayo players and fans protesting strongly.

Reactions from Managers

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed frustration after the match.

“It is what it is. There are no excuses. VAR should work. I don’t know what happened. It’s not my job,” Flick said.

Despite Yamal’s opener, Barca missed chances to extend their lead, with Dani Olmo spurning a clear opportunity. Flick admitted his side lacked intensity and made too many mistakes.

Rayo Push Barca to the Limit

Rayo Vallecano created several chances to win the game. Goalkeeper Joan Garcia produced outstanding saves to deny Isi Palazon, Andrei Ratiu, and Jorge de Frutos. Substitute Sergio Camello missed a golden opportunity late on, firing wide with the goal at his mercy.

The result means Barcelona, who had won their opening two matches, lost ground in the early title race. Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao are now the only teams with a perfect record after three games. Rayo sit on four points after their opening fixtures.
