Giants Place Carson Whisenhunt on 15-Day Injured List

Carson Whisenhunt pitching for the San Francisco Giants against the Chicago Cubs

The San Francisco Giants have placed rookie left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt on the 15-day injured list due to a strained back, retroactive to Thursday. In a corresponding move, the team recalled rookie right-hander Kai-Wei Teng from Triple-A Sacramento.

Meanwhile, third baseman Matt Chapman is expected to be “fine” and will not miss any games after fouling a ball off his left foot in the Giants’ 13-2 home win over the Baltimore Orioles. Chapman left the game for a pinch runner after drawing a walk in the fifth inning and experiencing soreness in his foot.

Whisenhunt, 24, last pitched on Wednesday, earning the win in a 12-3 home victory over the Chicago Cubs. In that outing, he allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings. Manager Bob Melvin noted that Whisenhunt experienced back tightness a few days ago, which worsens when throwing off a mound, although he can still throw on flat ground.

Since his major league debut on July 28, Whisenhunt is 2-1 with a 5.01 ERA, 12 walks, and 16 strikeouts in 23 1/3 innings over five starts. He was selected by San Francisco in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of East Carolina.

Kai-Wei Teng, 26, has a 1-3 record with an 8.78 ERA, nine walks, and 12 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings across four games (three starts) this season for the Giants. With Sacramento in the Pacific Coast League, Teng posted a 3-2 record with two saves, a 3.63 ERA, 22 walks, and 89 strikeouts in 57 innings over 26 games.
