Coventry set to shatter transfer record and could break it again imminently afterwards

Coventry have agreed a deal in principle with Eintracht Frankfurt to sign Switzerland defender Aurele Amenda, talkSPORT understands.

The Sky Blues are set to snap up the 22-year-old centre-back in a club-record £17million deal ahead of the Sky Blues’ return to the Premier League.

Coventry’s record transfer currently stands at the £7.7m shelled out to Turkish side Antalyaspor for USA forward Haji Wright in 2023.

However, the move for Amenda might not stand as the club’s record transfer for long.

Coventry could break it again this summer if they complete the permanent signing of £20m-rated goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton.

Although Amenda is currently at the World Cup with Switzerland, the deal is understood to be almost completed.

Amenda, who joined Eintracht Frankfurt in 2024 from Swiss side Young Boys, has been praised for his athleticism and ball-playing ability.

He featured 29 times for the Bundesliga side last season, including five in the Champions League.

Despite that, he considered leaving Frankfurt in the January transfer window due to not getting as much playing time as he was initially promised.

A lot of promise

German football expert Constantin Eckner said: “He’s a talented, really tall Swiss defender. Right now, he is with the Switzerland team at the World Cup.

“He’s athletic and has a really high work-ethic. I’ve been told by people at Frankfurt that he really puts in the work and even after training sessions, which is really appreciated by a lot of people.

“He’s not had the easiest of times at Frankfurt because sometimes he’s only been a back-up.

“He did get more game time under Albert Riera, who was Frankfurt’s coach for the second half of the season, but I think it’s time for him to move on and try something else.

“Getting a starting eleven spot would be a fresh start for a very talented defender. I could see him starting for Coventry City and developing as he’s only 22 years old.”

The defender is yet to feature for his country at the World Cup having been named as an unused substitute in all three of their matches so far.

Amenda is set to become Coventry’s second signing of the season after the acquisition of Brentford midfielder Frank Onyeka on Monday.

And there was further good news for the club on Tuesday with the news that boss Frank Lampard has signed a new contract until 2029.

The 48-year-old steered Coventry to the Championship title last term to seal promotion back to the Premier League after a 24-year absence.

His previous deal was set to expire at the end of next season, but has now committed his future to the club despite recent interest from Fulham and Crystal Palace.
