Messi Final Argentina Qualifier: Farewell at Monumental Stadium

Messi final Argentina qualifier training Buenos Aires

Lionel Messi is set to play his final World Cup qualifier in Argentina on Thursday as the South American qualifying campaign enters its final stretch.

The 38-year-old captain will take to the pitch at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires against Venezuela. Messi described it as a very special moment, with his family — including his wife, children, and parents — expected in attendance.

“It’s going to be very special for me because it will be my last qualifying match,” Messi said. “I don’t know if there will be friendlies or more matches after that.”

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni added: “If it really is the last qualifying match, we have to enjoy it. It will be emotional, special, and beautiful.”

Argentina has already booked its ticket to the 2026 World Cup, leading South America’s qualifying with 35 points. Ecuador and Brazil have also secured their places, while Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, and Venezuela are still fighting for the remaining automatic spots.

Ecuador’s comeback story stands out, overcoming a three-point penalty to qualify. Brazil, meanwhile, endured a turbulent campaign marked by coaching changes. Carlo Ancelotti’s debut followed a 4–1 defeat to Argentina.

The qualifiers have produced unforgettable moments, from Colombia’s first-ever win over Brazil to Luis Suarez’s emotional retirement with Uruguay.

Thursday’s fixtures:

  • Paraguay vs Ecuador
  • Argentina vs Venezuela
  • Uruguay vs Peru
  • Colombia vs Bolivia
  • Brazil vs Chile

If not settled, the final round on September 9 will decide the last spots for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.
