Spain Bulgaria World Cup Qualifier: Spain Cruise Past Bulgaria 3-0

Spain players celebrate 3-0 win over Bulgaria in Group E qualifier

Spain kicked off their World Cup qualifying campaign in emphatic style with a 3-0 away win over Bulgaria in their Group E opener. All three goals came in the first half, courtesy of Mikel Oyarzabal, Marc Cucurella, and Mikel Merino, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

Oyarzabal Sets the Pace

It took just five minutes for Spain to take control. Martin Zubimendi’s clever through-ball found Mikel Oyarzabal, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner, marking his fifth goal in six international appearances. Oyarzabal almost doubled the lead minutes later, but Bulgaria goalkeeper Svetoslav Vutsov made a crucial save.

Cucurella and Merino Extend the Lead

Spain doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark when Lamine Yamal’s cross was cleared only as far as Marc Cucurella, who fired an unstoppable left-footed shot into the net for his first goal with La Roja. Eight minutes later, Mikel Merino made it 3-0 with a glancing header from Yamal’s corner.

Controlled Second Half

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente brought on Rodri and Dani Carvajal, both returning from ACL injuries. Despite dominating possession, Spain couldn’t add further goals, but the first-half lead ensured all three points.

“We had a very good first half with intensity, combinations, and chances,” de la Fuente said. “In the second half, we lacked a bit of energy, but the result was never in doubt.”

Looking Ahead

Spain, appearing at the last 12 World Cups, travel to Turkey for their next qualifier, while Bulgaria face Georgia. With Euro 2024 champions already guaranteed a playoff spot via Nations League ranking, Spain are expected to top the group.

Spain’s attacking depth, with Oyarzabal, Cucurella, Merino, and Yamal, highlighted their dominance in this Spain Bulgaria World Cup qualifier. Bulgaria will need to regroup quickly as their qualification hopes face an uphill battle.
