Former Manchester United star returns to Ajax

Daley Blind has officially rejoined Ajax after the Dutch giants reached an agreement to bring the experienced defender back to Amsterdam on a free transfer, as the club announced on their website.

The Netherlands international has signed a contract until 30 June 2027, beginning his third spell with the Eredivisie club after leaving Girona at the expiration of his contract earlier this summer.

Blind’s return comes after a career that has taken him across some of Europe’s biggest clubs, including four successful years at Manchester United.

The versatile defender arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2014 before making 141 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils.

During his time in Manchester, Daley Blind scored six goals and collected four major honours, lifting the FA Cup, EFL Cup, FA Community Shield and UEFA Europa League before departing in 2018.

Blind immediately helped the Dutch club secure the domestic league and cup double before adding the Johan Cruijff Shield in 2019.

Although the 2019/20 Eredivisie campaign was cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic, Ajax finished top of the table, while Blind later added two more league titles before leaving the club at the end of 2022.

Across his Ajax career, he has now won seven Eredivisie championships and several individual honours.

Following his departure from Amsterdam, Blind joined Bayern Munich on a short-term contract in January 2023, winning the Bundesliga before moving to Girona later that summer.

After becoming a free agent this year, the experienced defender has now opted for another return to Ajax, where he has already made 333 first-team appearances and scored 13 goals.

Ajax sporting director Jordi Cruijff welcomed the move, saying, “It’s great to welcome Daley back to the club where it all began for him. He brings experience, composure and quality, and those are attributes that can help this group immediately.

“For us, this is a logical move because someone with his background and personality fits perfectly with what we want to build.”

Blind’s return adds another chapter to an outstanding career, while Manchester United supporters will remember him as one of the dependable figures during a period that delivered multiple trophies at Old Trafford.
