AS Roma manager breaks silence on Manu Kone transfer reports

Manchester United have made it clear that strengthening the midfield remains one of the club’s biggest priorities.

While Andrey Santos is expected to become the Red Devils’ first arrival of the summer, recruitment staff continue to monitor a number of other options across Europe.

One player who has remained firmly on United’s radar is Roma midfielder Manu Kone, with the French international continuing to impress both in Serie A and on the international stage.

Fresh comments from Italy have now provided another insight into his uncertain future in the Italian capital.

Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has addressed the ongoing speculation surrounding Manu Kone after Manchester United’s interest in the midfielder intensified in recent days.

The 24-year-old has become one of United’s leading alternatives as the club looks to add further quality in the middle of the park following Santos’ imminent arrival.

Speaking ahead of Roma’s training camp, Gasperini admitted the club’s financial situation could ultimately influence what happens with Manu Kone this summer.

“Will he stay? I think these Financial Fair Play conditions vary from team to team; they’re not precise.

“It’s undeniable that Roma knew they needed to balance their books. I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough, but it’s clear that balance sheets are crucial for clubs, and there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

The Roma boss also suggested the final decision will not rest with him alone.

“This matter concerns him and the owners. They’re organizing the centenary, so the club will then decide what will be done,” Gasperini added, as relayed by La Gazzeta dello Sport.

Kone has attracted serious interest across Europe during the current transfer window.

Roma have already rejected a £33.8 million (€40 million) offer from Atletico Madrid, making it clear they value the France international significantly higher.

The Serie A side are understood to want around £50.7 million (€60 million) before they would consider allowing the midfielder to leave.

Manchester United remain firmly in the race and are reportedly preparing an offer worth around £42.6 million (€50 million) as they continue exploring ways to strengthen Carrick’s midfield options.

Whether that bid will be enough to convince Roma remains to be seen, but Gasperini’s latest comments suggest the midfielder’s future could still depend as much on the club’s financial position as it does on their plans for the new season.
