Nearly eight weeks on from their final fixture of the 2025/26 season, Manchester United’s preparations for the new campaign move up a notch with their opening friendly of the summer against Wrexham in Helsinki.
There is plenty of optimism at Old Trafford heading into 2026/27 as the club return to the Champions League after three years away following an excellent second half of last term under Michael Carrick, who arrived as interim manager in January and guided the Red Devils to third in the Premier League.
Carrick will no doubt have been hard at work since May as he looks to build on his strong start, with United’s first batch of players returning for pre-season last Thursday.
Harry Maguire, Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are among those who could be involved against Wrexham, but several stars are yet to join up with the squad due to their involvement in the World Cup, with the likes of Argentina’s Lisandro Martinez and England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo still in North America.

On the face of it, Wrexham’s meteoric rise up the English pyramid slowed a little last season – but it was still a positive campaign for Phil Parkinson’s men.
The Red Dragons were unable to achieve a fourth successive promotion, yet a seventh-place finish in their first season back in the second tier after 43 years away showed they have every reason to continue looking up in 2026/27.
Phil Parkinson’s men kicked off their pre-season fixture schedule last Saturday with a 0-0 draw against Wisla Krakow in Poland, in which goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo saved a penalty.
This summer tune-up at Helsinki’s iconic Olympic Stadium should be another useful test for Wrexham, who beat United 3-1 when the sides last met in a pre-season friendly in 2023.
