Manchester United’s preparations for the new season have centred around new arrivals, but one of the club’s biggest victories this summer may not come from the transfer market at all.
With Michael Carrick rebuilding a squad capable of competing in the Champions League again, securing the long-term future of the dressing room’s most influential figure has become just as important as any signing.
Supporters have spent months wondering whether their captain would commit to the project or finally seek a new challenge elsewhere.
It now appears that uncertainty is about to end.
Bruno Fernandes set to announce decision on Manchester United future
Bruno Fernandes is expected to announce that he is staying at Manchester United, with official confirmation anticipated later this month, as reported by the Express.
The Portuguese playmaker has been locked in discussions with the club over an improved contract, and those talks are understood to have moved significantly closer to completion.
According to the Express, a deal worth around £400,000 per week is on the table, with Bruno Fernandes now ready to dedicate his future to Manchester United.
The news will come as a major boost for Carrick, who views the captain as one of the foundations of his project heading into the 2026/27 season.
Fernandes’ future has attracted plenty of speculation over the past year.
Last summer, the midfielder seriously considered a lucrative move to the Saudi Pro League, but ultimately chose to remain at Old Trafford in the belief that better days were ahead.
Bruno Fernandes confirmed he rejected a massive, record-breaking £100m offer with £700,000-a-week wages from Saudi side Al-Hilal.
He stated he turned down the move because he wanted to stay at the highest level, which was heavily influenced by talks with his family and former manager Ruben Amorim.
Under Carrick, United secured a return to the Champions League, while optimism around competing for major trophies has grown considerably ahead of the new season.
Although Bruno Fernandes has entered the final year of his existing contract, Manchester United also hold the option of extending it by a further 12 months.
Nevertheless, the club have been determined to secure a fresh long-term agreement rather than rely on that clause.
Few players have earned a new deal more than Fernandes.
The United skipper enjoyed a remarkable 2025/26 season, collecting the Premier League Player of the Season award as well as being named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.
He also claimed the Coca-Cola Playmaker award after setting a new single-season assist record of 21 and rounded off an unforgettable campaign by winning Manchester United’s Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
