Manchester City will welcome a familiar face back to the Etihad Stadium when they begin their Champions League campaign against Napoli. Former City captain Kevin De Bruyne makes an emotional return after his summer move to the Italian side.
An Emotional Return
De Bruyne spent a decade at Manchester City, winning 19 trophies and becoming one of the most influential midfielders in the clubâs history. Pep Guardiola admitted it will be special to see him back in Manchester, though he added the real emotions will come âafter the game.â
The Belgian midfielder has already made a strong start in Serie A under Antonio Conte, scoring two goals in his first three matches for Napoli. Despite wearing Napoli blue, he remains a beloved figure among City fans.
Guardiolaâs Focus on the Campaign
City were eliminated in the playoff round of last seasonâs Champions League by Real Madrid, but Guardiola is determined to see his side begin strongly this time around.
âJust enjoy the moment. Weâre happy to be here after the path we have been on. Weâre focusing on starting well in this competition,â Guardiola said. âIf you start with a bad result, it can be difficult.â
The City boss added that his side are not clear favourites this year but stressed the importance of momentum in the group stage.
Donnarumma Boosts Cityâs Squad
One of Guardiolaâs key assets this season is new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian, who played a crucial role in PSGâs Champions League success last year, has already impressed at the Etihad.
âAt just 26 years old, he can play for us for many years. He is a top-class keeper,â Guardiola said.
With De Bruyneâs return adding extra spice to the fixture, and both teams eager to set the tone early, Thursdayâs clash at the Etihad promises to be a thrilling encounter.
