Vinicius Jr Frustrated as Alonso Defends Rotation Policy at Real Madrid

Vinicius Jr has yet to play a full 90 minutes this season under new Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, sparking frustration and headlines in the Spanish media.

The 25-year-old Brazilian, who scored in the Champions League finals during Real’s 2022 and 2024 triumphs, has been substituted in 10 of the 12 matches since Alonso replaced Carlo Ancelotti in June. In the other two games, he started on the bench, including last week’s Champions League opener against Olympique de Marseille.

Standout Performance Against Espanyol

Saturday’s LaLiga clash with Espanyol highlighted Vinicius’ importance. The winger assisted Kylian Mbappe’s goal, hit the post from close range, and was a constant threat down the left flank. Despite his performance, Alonso substituted him, leaving Vinicius visibly frustrated.

Statistics underline the controversy: Vinicius is Real Madrid’s second-most involved player in goals but ranks only 10th in minutes played this season.

Alonso Responds to Rotation Criticism

When asked about his rotation policy, Alonso stayed diplomatic:

“I was a player myself and when I was substituted, I didn’t like it either. I don’t think it’s a big deal that the players show their frustration. I’m happy with what Vinicius is doing. It is still early in the season. We need everyone, I’m happy and we can do better in the last third.”

Real Madrid’s Current Form

Despite tensions, Real Madrid have started the LaLiga season perfectly, topping the standings with 15 points from five matches, two ahead of champions Barcelona.
