Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi celebrated his team’s 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain as one of his finest moments since joining the club but insists the real challenge lies ahead.
Marseille stunned PSG at the Orange Velodrome on Monday night, with Nayef Aguerd’s early header sealing their first home Ligue 1 win over their arch-rivals since 2011. The result delighted fans and lifted Marseille into sixth place on the table with nine points, just three behind PSG.
“It’s one of the best days since I arrived. I came here for the Velodrome and to beat PSG — the team that represents power and has dominated for years. But we haven’t achieved anything yet. The most important thing is our next match in Strasbourg,” De Zerbi said.
Building momentum
Despite the historic victory, De Zerbi reminded his players and supporters that consistency is key if Marseille are to challenge PSG and Monaco for the Ligue 1 crown. PSG, who claimed a record-extending 13th title last season, sit behind leaders Monaco only on goal difference.
De Zerbi, who previously managed Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, was sent off in stoppage time but still celebrated passionately with the home crowd.
What’s next?
Marseille now shift focus to their upcoming clash against Strasbourg on Friday, where De Zerbi hopes his side can take another step toward building a team capable of sustained success.
