
Former Spain and Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) season, his club Inter Miami confirmed on Thursday.
Busquets, 37, rose through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy and made his senior debut in 2008. He went on to spend 18 years at the Catalan club, where he made more than 700 appearances, winning nine LaLiga titles and three Champions League trophies.
The midfielder joined Inter Miami in 2023, reuniting with former teammates Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. In the United States, he added the Leagues Cup and Supporters’ Shield to his decorated career.
On the international stage, Busquets earned 143 caps for Spain, playing a pivotal role in their historic triumphs at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012.
In a farewell video posted on Instagram, Busquets said:
“I feel like the time has come to say goodbye to my career as a professional footballer. It’s been almost 20 years of enjoying this incredible story I always dreamed of. I’m retiring very happy, proud, fulfilled, and above all, grateful.”
Widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive midfielders of all time, Busquets will play the final matches of his career during the MLS playoffs with Inter Miami.
