Éder Militão Admits He Considered Retirement After Second Injury: “It’s Been a Tough Two Years”

Éder Militão speaks about his injury recovery and return to football

Real Madrid defender Éder Militão has opened up about the emotional and physical toll of his two long-term knee injuries, revealing he even thought about retiring from football.

Speaking ahead of Brazil’s friendly match against South Korea, Militão reflected on the challenges he faced after missing over 438 days of action in the last two years due to two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries.

“After the second injury, a lot of thoughts went through my head. I thought about giving up football because it’s not easy,” Militão admitted. “But with the help of my wife, my daughter, and my teammates, I’m grateful to be playing again.”

The 26-year-old described how the recovery process tested his faith and patience.

“You have to rely heavily on your family and God. It takes you away from your normal life and training routines, and suddenly you need help from others. Thank God I recovered and returned to a high level—it wasn’t easy.”

Militão also spoke about his reunion with Carlo Ancelotti, who is now managing Brazil.

“My time with Ancelotti at Real Madrid helped me a lot. He’s an amazing person who has achieved so much and helps the entire team. I knew I had to perform well at club level to earn my place in the national team.”

When asked about the intense competition for defensive positions in the Brazil squad, Militão said he’s open to playing wherever needed.

“Right now I’m playing at full-back, which I’ve done before for São Paulo, Porto, and Brazil. I’m comfortable there, but I’ve always been a centre-back at heart. No matter the position, I’ll give my best for the team.”

Militão’s story stands as an inspiring testament to perseverance and faith in overcoming adversity.
