Liverpool Plotting Shock January Move for Dortmund Defender Nico Schlotterbeck

Liverpool are reportedly preparing a surprise January approach for Borussia Dortmund star Nico Schlotterbeck as they begin long-term succession plans for Virgil van Dijk.

The 25-year-old German international has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s standout defenders since his move from Freiburg in 2022 and has attracted interest from several European giants, including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City.

With Ibrahima Konaté expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season when his contract expires, Liverpool are exploring defensive reinforcements and see Schlotterbeck as a potential direct replacement for captain Virgil van Dijk, whose current deal runs until 2027.

Dortmund are pushing to extend Schlotterbeck’s contract beyond 2027, but negotiations have stalled. The defender, capped 22 times by Germany, has hinted that he is in no rush to commit his future, signalling an openness to a move where he can consistently compete for major trophies.

However, Dortmund’s hierarchy have made it clear they will not sanction a sale in January, meaning Liverpool may need to table a significant offer or wait until the summer to secure the deal.

Liverpool’s urgency has increased following Giovanni Leoni’s serious knee injury, which could keep the young Italian sidelined for up to a year, leaving the squad light in defensive depth.

As it stands, Liverpool remain firmly in the race, with internal planning already underway for life after Van Dijk as the Premier League champions look to secure one of Europe’s most highly rated centre-backs.
