Arsenal are reportedly monitoring Real Madrid defender Victor Valdepeñas as Mikel Arteta looks to further strengthen his defensive options.
The 19-year-old has recently broken into Real Madrid’s first team and is regarded as one of the club’s most promising young defenders. Arsenal are understood to have scouted Valdepeñas, with several other top European clubs also keeping close tabs on his progress.
Arteta is keen to add a young, versatile defender to his squad, although the Gunners may prefer to wait until the summer window before making a move. Valdepeñas’ ability to operate both at left-back and centre-back makes him an appealing long-term option.
The teenager made his senior Real Madrid debut last month, starting at left-back against Alavés and playing 78 minutes in an assured performance. After the match, Valdepeñas described the moment as a lifelong dream, underlining how highly he values his breakthrough at the Bernabéu.
Despite Arsenal’s interest, prising the defender away from Real Madrid could prove difficult. The Spanish giants see Valdepeñas as an important part of their future plans and are reluctant to lose him so early in his development.
Arsenal have also previously watched Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, though their interest has yet to advance. Jacquet is currently in discussions over a potential move elsewhere and is believed to be valued at around £60 million.
With Arteta already able to call upon Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, Ben White and Piero Hincapié, competition for places remains strong. Any defensive addition is expected to be a calculated move aimed at long-term squad balance rather than immediate necessity.
