Brugge Thrash Rangers 6-0 as Qarabag, Copenhagen and Benfica Reach Champions League

Club Brugge’s Nicolo Tresoldi celebrates scoring the opener as Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland looks dejected in Champions League playoff.

Rangers’ Champions League dream ended in humiliation as they were crushed 6-0 by Club Brugge on Wednesday night, completing a staggering 9-1 aggregate defeat in their playoff tie.

The night began disastrously for the Scottish side when Nicolo Tresoldi opened the scoring after five minutes, and within minutes, Max Aarons was sent off for a last-man foul on Christos Tzolis.

Hans Vanaken doubled Brugge’s lead, before Joaquin Seys scored twice in quick succession to put the tie well beyond doubt before halftime. To compound Rangers’ misery, Alexander Stankovic added a fifth in first-half stoppage time.

After the break, Tzolis made it six, sealing a historic victory for the Belgian side, who advance to the new league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Elsewhere on the night:

  • Qarabag squeezed through 5-4 on aggregate despite a 3-2 home loss to Ferencvaros, booking their second-ever appearance in the group stage.
  • Copenhagen defeated Basel 2-0 at home (3-1 on aggregate) thanks to goals from Andreas Cornelius and Youssoufa Moukoko.
  • Benfica progressed with a 1-0 win over Fenerbahce in Lisbon, courtesy of Kerem Akturkoglu’s first-half strike.

The Champions League league-phase draw will be held on Thursday in Monaco, with the opening fixtures scheduled between September 16-18, 2025.
