Former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola has made an unexpected appearance at the Ryder Cup, taking on the role of cart driver for Europe’s vice-captain Francesco Molinari at Bethpage Black in New York.
Zola, who lit up Stamford Bridge between 1996 and 2003 with his flair and silverware – winning two FA Cups, a League Cup, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup – is now getting a close-up look at the golfing world as part of Europe’s backroom team.
His presence has already caused a stir, with English golfer Justin Rose admitting he was completely starstruck after meeting the Italian legend during practice rounds.
“I meet a lot of really cool people in my life through golf. But I was like, ‘Whoa! Wow! Hey, Gianfranco!’ I was starstruck, which is amazing,” Rose said, showing his Chelsea fandom.
Rose, competing in his seventh Ryder Cup, believes Zola’s presence could provide Europe with a mental boost as they aim to retain the trophy with their first away win since 2012.
“Even if he’s not part of the coaching staff, his knowledge about performing under pressure, momentum, and locker room mentality could really help us,” Rose added. “Hopefully he gets the chance to share that with the team.”
The Ryder Cup begins on Friday, and while Zola may not be swinging a club, his influence could be felt in the spirit of Team Europe.
