Djed Spence Becomes First Muslim to Play for England

Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Muslim to earn a senior cap for England.

The 25-year-old came off the bench in the 69th minute during England’s 5-0 World Cup qualifying win over Serbia in Belgrade, replacing Chelsea’s Reece James.

A Historic Moment

Spence, London-born, admitted he was unaware he would be the first Muslim to represent England at the senior level.

“I was surprised because I didn’t know I was the first, so it’s a blessing,” he said.
“It’s good to make history and hopefully inspire young kids around the world that they can make it as well.”

This milestone is significant for British Muslims, who are under-represented in professional football despite comprising 6% of the population.

A Role Model for the Community

Ebadur Rahman, founder of Nujum Sports—which supports over 400 Muslim athletes—called Spence’s debut a “moment of celebration” and highlighted his responsibility as a role model.

“Djed has big responsibility on his shoulders—not only is he playing for England, he is playing for Muslims around the world because he is now a role model breaking a barrier,” Rahman said.

Journey to the National Team

Spence began his professional career at Middlesbrough before joining Tottenham in 2022. After several loan spells, he has become a key player, contributing to Tottenham’s Europa League final victory last season.

Grassroots coach Yunus Lunat noted that Muslim representation in English football has historically been limited.

“Muslims haven’t had enough opportunities or enough role models for young, aspiring players to follow. It’s not particularly good that it’s taken until 2025 for a Muslim to play for England.”

Emotional Debut

Spence described earning his first England cap as an emotional and proud moment.

“Whatever religion you believe in, just believe in God,” he said.
“Days like today are special because of God, for me. I was a little bit emotional because the journey hasn’t been easy. But I am officially an England player now and I am over the moon.”

Spence’s debut represents a breakthrough for diversity in English football and a milestone for aspiring players around the world.
