Netherlands Qualifiers: Top of Group G Despite Struggles

Memphis Depay scores for Netherlands in World Cup qualifiers

The Netherlands qualifiers campaign remains on track as they sit top of Group G after collecting four points from matches against Poland and Lithuania. However, performances have raised concerns for coach Ronald Koeman

The Dutch currently have 10 points from four games, leading the group on goal difference ahead of Poland, who have played one match more. But a 1-1 draw with Poland in Rotterdam and a narrow 3-2 win over lowly Lithuania in Kaunas have drawn criticism from players and fans alike.

Van Dijk voices frustration

Captain Virgil van Dijk did not hide his disappointment after the game in Lithuania.

“We were sloppy in possession, failed to win duels, and didn’t take the second ball either. Three points are the most important, but if you want to progress, this sort of thing cannot happen.”

The Dutch were cruising at 2-0 before allowing 143rd-ranked Lithuania to equalize with two quick goals before halftime. A second strike from Memphis Depay in the 64th minute eventually sealed the win.

Van Dijk praised Depay, who became the Netherlands’ all-time top scorer with 52 international goals, but warned that careless defending could cost them dearly in tougher matches.

Koeman concerned despite win

Coach Ronald Koeman admitted he was forced to make tactical adjustments late in the game, including adding a fifth defender for extra height and control.

“We played with fire. Fortunately, it didn’t cost us any points, but it could have been disastrous. I don’t have a real explanation why we made it so difficult for ourselves,” Koeman said.

What’s next for the Netherlands

The Netherlands will face Malta (away) and Finland (home) in October before a crucial return clash with Poland in November that could decide the group’s outcome.
