Former Barcelona and France defender Samuel Umtiti has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31.

Umtiti, who played a key role in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, revealed his decision on social media on Monday night, bringing an end to a career marked by both glory and struggles with injury.

Career Highlights

World Cup Hero: Umtiti scored the decisive goal in the semi-final against Belgium and started in the final, where France beat Croatia 4-2 to lift their second World Cup.

Barcelona Success: After rising through Olympique Lyonnais’ academy, he joined Barcelona in 2016. He went on to make 133 appearances for the Catalan giants, winning two LaLiga titles.

Challenges: Despite his talent, Umtiti’s career was plagued by chronic knee cartilage issues, which limited his consistency and playing time. His last professional stint came with Ligue 1 side Lille.

Umtiti’s Farewell

“After an intense career with ups and downs, the time has come to say goodbye. I gave it my ALL with passion and I have NO regrets,” Umtiti wrote.
He also expressed gratitude to the clubs, coaches, and teammates he worked with throughout his career.
