Ghana midfielder Abu Francis suffered a devastating leg injury during Friday’s international friendly against Japan, leaving both teams in shock and raising fears that his 2026 World Cup hopes may be over.
The 24-year-old was attempting to block a shot from Leeds United star Ao Tanaka when his leg twisted backwards on impact. Francis immediately screamed in agony, clutching his leg as players urgently called for medical help.
Team medics rushed onto the pitch to stabilise him before he was stretchered off and taken to Toyota Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment.
The Ghana Football Association later confirmed that Francis is in stable condition, adding that doctors from both teams have agreed on a treatment plan. The GFA thanked supporters for their messages and promised further updates on his surgery and recovery.
The incident, described by fans online as “one of the most horrific injuries in world football history,” led to a long stoppage in play. Japan’s Ao Tanaka approached the Ghana bench to apologise, though the collision was clearly accidental.
Francis, who plays club football for Toulouse, was making his first appearance for Ghana in six months and has only seven caps. With Ghana already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, the match was part of their ongoing preparations — but the injury now puts his tournament dreams in serious doubt.
Ghana head coach Otto Addo expressed his deep concern, saying:
“These things happen in football, but this… it was really, really bad. I’m praying it’s not as serious as it looks.”
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu also sent his well-wishes, hoping Francis recovers quickly and returns to football.
Toulouse released a message of support, writing that the “images are terrible” and that the entire club stands behind the midfielder during his recovery.
Francis was replaced in the 68th minute by defender Alidu Seidu after the lengthy stoppage.
