Sweden national team coach Graham Potter has signed a new contract extension that will keep him in charge until 2030. The Swedish Football Association confirmed the agreement as the country prepares for crucial World Cup playoff matches.
Potter, 50, initially took the Sweden job in October 2025 on a short term deal. His new long term contract reflects the federation’s confidence in his leadership and vision for the national team.
Graham Potter Commits to Sweden’s Long Term Project
The former Chelsea and West Ham United manager made his reputation in Swedish football during a successful seven year spell at Ostersund. His work at the club gained international attention and eventually led to opportunities in the English Premier League.
Speaking after the announcement, Potter said continuing as Sweden coach means a great deal to him. He also stressed the responsibility that comes with leading a national team with a strong football tradition.
Potter explained that Sweden has a proud history of competing in major international tournaments. He added that the team’s goal is to return to that level and regularly qualify for the biggest competitions.
Sweden Target World Cup Qualification Through Playoffs
Sweden still have a chance to qualify for the upcoming World Cup through the playoff route. The team will face Ukraine in a decisive match scheduled to take place in Valencia, Spain.
If Sweden defeat Ukraine, they will then play either Poland or Albania in Stockholm. The winner of that match will secure a place at the FIFA World Cup tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Swedish Football Association believes Potter’s long term appointment will provide stability and direction as the national team aims to return to the global stage.
