Kevin De Bruyne Returns to Etihad as Manchester City Face Napoli in Champions League

Kevin De Bruyne returns to the Etihad ahead of Manchester City vs Napoli Champions League match

Manchester City will welcome a familiar face back to the Etihad Stadium when they begin their Champions League campaign against Napoli. Former City captain Kevin De Bruyne makes an emotional return after his summer move to the Italian side.

An Emotional Return

De Bruyne spent a decade at Manchester City, winning 19 trophies and becoming one of the most influential midfielders in the club’s history. Pep Guardiola admitted it will be special to see him back in Manchester, though he added the real emotions will come “after the game.”

The Belgian midfielder has already made a strong start in Serie A under Antonio Conte, scoring two goals in his first three matches for Napoli. Despite wearing Napoli blue, he remains a beloved figure among City fans.

Guardiola’s Focus on the Campaign

City were eliminated in the playoff round of last season’s Champions League by Real Madrid, but Guardiola is determined to see his side begin strongly this time around.

“Just enjoy the moment. We’re happy to be here after the path we have been on. We’re focusing on starting well in this competition,” Guardiola said. “If you start with a bad result, it can be difficult.”

The City boss added that his side are not clear favourites this year but stressed the importance of momentum in the group stage.

Donnarumma Boosts City’s Squad

One of Guardiola’s key assets this season is new goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian, who played a crucial role in PSG’s Champions League success last year, has already impressed at the Etihad.

“At just 26 years old, he can play for us for many years. He is a top-class keeper,” Guardiola said.

With De Bruyne’s return adding extra spice to the fixture, and both teams eager to set the tone early, Thursday’s clash at the Etihad promises to be a thrilling encounter.
