Liverpool 1-2 Man City: Fujino’s Late Strike Sinks Former Boss Gareth Taylor at Anfield

An 86th-minute winner from Aoba Fujino completed a dramatic comeback for Manchester City, handing Gareth Taylor a painful defeat against his former club and leaving Liverpool still without a single point in the Women’s Super League this season.

Taylor, who spent five years at City before his departure earlier this year, looked set to secure Liverpool’s first points of the campaign thanks to a disciplined defensive display. The breakthrough came early in the second half when Cornelia Kapocs headed home from close range after a perfect cross from Ceri Holland, ending Liverpool’s long wait for a WSL goal.

However, City responded quickly. Teenage star Iman Beney, fresh off her late heroics against Arsenal, struck again to level the score. With momentum on their side, City continued to press, and their pressure paid off in the closing minutes as Fujino fired in a powerful finish past Rafaela Borggrafe to seal all three points.

Liverpool thought they had snatched a dramatic equaliser in the final moments when Gemma Bonner smashed home a rebound following a mistake by Ayaka Yamashita, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

There was further concern for the hosts as Marie Therese Hobinger limped off in the first half with a suspected knee injury, visibly emotional as she left the pitch.

The defeat leaves Liverpool alongside West Ham as the only two teams yet to record a point this season. City, meanwhile, climb to second in the table, moving above rivals Manchester United and sitting just one point behind leaders Chelsea.
